Lappeenranta is a vibrant, cosmopolitan tourist town on the shores of Lake Saimaa, Europe’s fourth largest lake. The city is the second most visited city in Finland by tourists. Today, Lappeenranta is a popular centre for tourism and trade, as well as a centre for research and innovation, with a population of 72,000 inhabitants. It is a student town – 8,000 people study here at Skinnarila, Finland’s most international university campus. It unites the Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) and Saimaa University of Applied Sciences (Saimia). The “Spirit of Skinnarila” is an integral part of the city’s appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lappeenranta was founded in 1649 by Queen Christina of Sweden. Its Swedish name is Villmanstrand, which translates as “savage coast” or “wild coast”, hence the city’s coat of arms, which depicts a savage. The main historical buildings of the city are the fortress, towering up in its center, and the house of the merchant Volkov. Now the fortress houses the main museums of Lappeenranta, and the Volkov house acts as a museum and a souvenir shop. The fortress offers a breathtaking view of Lake Saimaa, the yacht port and the pier for Saimaa cruising ships. Lake Saimaa, on the shores of which Lappeenranta and Imatra are located, is the largest in Finland and the fourth largest in Europe. In addition to the cleanest water and beaches, this reservoir offers a lot of types of recreation: fishing, boating, motorboating, sailing, kayaking, as well as water skiing, windsurfing, wakeboarding. About 13,000 islands, amazing landscapes, quiet backwaters, equipped piers, and detailed route maps make sailing on the lake pleasant and safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A beach holiday on the pristine shores of Lake Saimaa, horse riding, picking berries and mushrooms, playing paintball, golf and other entertainment is an unforgettable experience. The Saimaa area does not quieten down for winter. You can do skating on the lake, swim in the dry suit, do cross-country skiing or go down the slope or even take part in winter rally drive.
